Summary (tl;dr)

The Apple TV+ series "Ted Lasso" is currently a major topic of discussion as its fourth season is airing, notably due to a recent episode featuring the unexpected death of a beloved character, Mae, and the ongoing shift in the show's narrative.

Essential Background

"Ted Lasso" is an acclaimed American sports comedy-drama television series that debuted on Apple TV+ in August 2020. The show gained widespread popularity for its optimistic protagonist, Ted Lasso, an American football coach hired to manage an English soccer team, AFC Richmond, despite his lack of experience in the sport. Although its third season, which concluded in March 2023, was widely anticipated to be the series finale, the show was officially renewed for a fourth season in March 2025.

The Full Story

"Ted Lasso" is trending due to its ongoing fourth season, which premiered on August 5, 2026, and is streaming weekly on Apple TV+, with its finale scheduled for October 7, 2026. This season marks a significant change, as Ted Lasso is now coaching the second-division women's team, the Lady Greyhounds. The recent ninth episode, "Mae Rides The Bus," has particularly driven online conversations and searches, as it depicted the death of Mae Green, the popular owner of the Crown & Anchor pub. The episode also included an "in memoriam" tribute to actor Anthony Head (who played Rupert Manion), which, given its immediate placement after Mae's death, has stirred debate among viewers. The fourth season has received an 89% critics' score and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Why It Matters

The continued trending of "Ted Lasso Season 4" demonstrates the show's enduring popularity and its ability to generate significant fan engagement, even after a widely speculated conclusion with its third season. The decision to introduce a fourth season with a new narrative focus on a women's team signifies the show's evolution and its creators' commitment to fresh storytelling. The recent major plot twist, involving the death of a beloved character, underscores the emotional investment viewers have in the series, leading to widespread discussion and a desire for recaps and explanations.
