He referred to Black people as a "hate group" and advised White people to avoid them. These remarks led to widespread condemnation, and as a result, many newspapers across the United States stopped publishing the "Dilbert" comic strip. His syndicator also cut ties with him, and a publisher canceled an upcoming book, effectively halting a significant part of his entertainment career. Adams later claimed his comments were hyperbole, or an exaggeration, meant to make a point.

More recently, Adams has also been in the news due to a serious health announcement. He revealed that he is battling aggressive prostate cancer that has spread to his bones. He has publicly appealed to Donald Trump for help in obtaining a specific cancer treatment, claiming there are delays in getting the necessary medication, which has drawn further public attention to him.
