Otherdarfur
The region of Darfur, located in western Sudan, is trending due to a catastrophic resurgence of conflict and a severe humanitarian crisis. This crisis is rooted in long-standing tensions and has significantly worsened with the ongoing civil war in Sudan.
The background to the current situation in Darfur involves decades of complex ethnic and economic rivalries. The region is home to numerous ethnic groups, and historically, competition over scarce resources like land and water has led to clashes. The central Sudanese government has often been accused of neglecting the region and, at times, fueling these tensions. A major conflict erupted in 2003, often described as a genocide, when the government armed Arab militias, known as the Janjaweed, to brutally suppress rebel groups predominantly from non-Arab African communities. This led to hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions displaced from their homes.
"Darfur" is trending now primarily because of the devastating civil war that began in Sudan in April 2023. This conflict pits the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a powerful paramilitary group that emerged from the Janjaweed militias. In Darfur, the RSF and its allied militias are once again accused of carrying out widespread, ethnically motivated violence, including mass killings, sexual violence, and the destruction of villages. These atrocities are tragically reminiscent of the violence seen in the early 2000s. The fighting has led to an extreme humanitarian emergency, with millions of people newly displaced, facing severe food shortages, and even famine, particularly in displacement camps. Recent reports from 2024 and 2025 have highlighted ongoing massacres and targeted attacks on civilians, drawing renewed, though often criticized as insufficient, international attention to the unfolding disaster.
